National Gallery of Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland approached IDEA looking for a web portal and series of films documenting the conservation of the Maclise painting, The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife.
They wanted to highlight the importance of this particular work of art and the conservation departments role in ‘Saving a National Treasure’, they also wanted to communicate this process with stakeholders and members of the public.
IDEA developed a series of 7 videos of the key players in the conservation project, with pieces by the Head of Conservation in the National Gallery, The Director and Conservators in the gallery , the Curator of Irish Art and the Country Executive for Ireland, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and the Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Perugia. We used a combination of pieces to camera by key players in the project with footage of the canvas arriving at the gallery, conservators working on the canvas and the careful process of moving the artwork within the gallery. We developed an identity, look and feel and design for the micro website, which reflected the significance of the conservation project.
This project was hugely successful for the National Gallery and received great publicity in the National Press and Television. The website was also awarded a Spider Award 2011. The Spiders honour Irish individuals and organisations for their outstanding achievements online and celebrate the success of the Irish internet and digital media.
